MPs agitate for more efficiency in public service

10th January 2011

Lindi Region legislators have asked the Association of Local Authority Tanzania (Alat) to stop bureaucracy and develop a habit of giving information to the community including a full ward council meeting in order for them to participate effectively in development activities.

Mchinga MP Said Mtanda made remarks, when contributing at a meeting for the election of Alat leaders held in Ruangwa this year.

He said it was important for the MPs to be given useful, accurate and timely information on development strategies including district and regional meetings aimed at discussing development issues to enable them to participate actively.

Mtanda said the bureaucracy made municipal council leaders fail to give useful information to MPs.

“We have been complaining of not being involved in meetings of our areas but it is not true that we are escaping as it has been said. We really want to participate but we are often not informed on the venues and dates of the meetings,” he said.

He said failure to communicate between executives and MPs meant that the Alat in Lindi operated in a way not acceptable in the 21st century.

Either he stressed a need for the executives to perform their work professionally and make use of mobile phone numbers, which would make easy communication to MPs during meetings so that they could participate effectively.

On his part, Alat Secretary Ahamadi Sawa admitted there was a communication problem between his office and MPs and promised to work on the matter and ensure MPs would participate in the meetings and get information on time.
