Members of Parliament, government officials and the general public will today pay their last respects to Arumeru East MP Jeremiah Sumari (CCM), who died on Thursday at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) where he was hospitalised.

According to Sumari’s cousin Oswald Kaaya, the last respects ceremony will take place at Karimjee grounds in Dar es Salaam.

Kaaya said before that, there would be Requiem Mass at Msasani Lutheran Church.

“His body is expected to be transported on Sunday to Arumeru district in Arusha region for burial on Monday,” he explained.

On Thursday, National Assembly Depute Speaker Job Ndugai told reporters that the parliamentary steering committee would meet to make funeral arrangements.

“The parliament has lost two MPs within a short time. This is a great loss to us and to the nation,” Ndugai said, referring to Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania bishop Dr Alex Malasusa, who described the late Sumari as a good churchgoer despite his intellectual status and that he executed his duties diligently.

President Jakaya Kikwete sent a condolence statement to Speaker Anne Makinda following the death of Sumari.

“I have been shocked and saddened by the death of Sumari because he was a leader, who worked for his electorate and the nation as well,” said Kikwete in the statement.

Kikwete also sent condolences to the family of the late Sumari for losing a leader and an important family member.

Sumari was Deputy Minister for Labour, Employment and Youth Development (2006-2008) and served in the same position in the Ministry of Planning and Finance in 2008.

His death comes just hours after President Kikwete led hundreds of mourners at the burial of Special Seats MP Regia Mtema (Cahdema), who died in a road accident last Saturday. She was buried at Ifakara’s Mkuliya graveyard in Kilombero district, Morogoro region on Wednesday.
