A two-day FIA-sanctioned motor sports safety seminar ended at the Tanga Beach Resort Hotel here yesterday.

The comprehensive seminar covered important topics regarding overall safety measures during motor sports activities, particularly rallies.

About 57 delegates from all over the country mostly marshals and stewards, who are the front runners in rallies, took part.

Besides theoretical part of topics particularly at opening day, some practical part of it was thoroughly covered yesterday.

Rally procedures, organization and chain of command, guides and time keeping are some of the topics laboured during the seminar.

Fire fighting equipment and their appropriate application whether in liquid flammables or hardware were also demonstrated to delegates.

When and how to use foam or dry powders in stopping fires similarly came up for the delegates’ comprehension.

On time keeping FIA instructors from the Motorsport Knowledge Institute of the Automobile and Touring Club of the United Arab Emirates (ATCUAE) underscored the need to observe integrity and credibility of the marshals.

Of the five FIA instructors that included Tanya Kutsenko, Stuart Murray, Angus Duthie, Charles Reynolds, the last one (Reynolds) dominated the lectures.

The seminar is the second back-to-back to be hosted by Tanga city.

The city’s mayor Omar Guledi announced the seminar closed while thanking everyone who took part to stage the pretty successful event.

The mayor hailed the Automobile Association of Tanzania for choosing Tanga as a place to host the seminar on safety measures during motor sport activities.

He said the fact Tanga City was chosen for the second time running, heralds how the city has been respected and valued.

In his vote of thanks, the AAT chief executive officer Yusuf Ghor expressed his sincere appreciation to all participants who attended the seminar including the five FIA instructors who took trouble to travel all the way from Dubai.

Ghor said the seminar has been successful as delegates will spread the knowledge they gained during the session to improve the current state of safety measures.

So far motor sports fatalities resulting from either drivers and navigators or spectators have been in single digit figures for the past four decades.

The low numerical figure highlights how the AAT has been working around the clock to maintain safety measures and values human life.

Crowd control has been highlighted as marshals and stewards have been urged to educate fans on safe positions to stay during rallies. A sensitization and awareness campaign has been proposed to educate the public, which AAT expects it will take at least two weeks.

Organisers of motor rallies have also been advised to maintain close contact with local authorities as well as the police on how best to control crowd mishaps so that safety isn’t compromised.
