Kigoma North Member of Parliament Kabwe Zitto

Kigoma North Member of Parliament Kabwe Zitto has opposed the payment of new sitting allowances to some members of parliament before the endorsement of the President.

He sounded the opposition yesterday in Dar es Salaam when addressing Christian faithful at a fundraising party hosted by St Nicholas & African Martyrs Cathedral Anglican Church in Tanzania.

“I think the President has heard the public outcry. Let him not endorse the additional allowances and those who have already received them be ordered to return them,” said Zitto who is also shadow Minister for Finance.

He faulted the reasons given by the government to increase the allowances. “Just imagine, a teacher is paid not more than 150,000/- per month, but a legislator, even if he or she doesn’t contribute in the House, gets 300,000/-[per day]. If we haven’t discovered any difference here, then we need prayers,” said Zitto, who doubles as deputy leader of the official opposition camp in the House.

He observed that a politician shouldn’t be respected for his position as MP, but for the service to the people, calling on legislators to work hard in supporting electorates achieve better lives.

Earlier, when welcoming Zitto to lead the fundraising function which was also attended by Dodoma regional commissioner Dr Rehema Nchimbi, Bishop Oscar Mnung’a of the Anglican Church, Newala Diocese, commended Zitto for contributing good ideas inside and outside the Parliament.

A total of 40m/- was collected at the funds-drive for the construction of two classrooms for Mwidu Nursery School in Chalinze, Bagamoyo district.
