Tasota outlines problems facing tourim operations

The Tanzania Association of Travel Agents (Tasota) has outlined the challenges which hinder the smooth operation of the tourism industry.

Speaking in an interview with this paper in Dar es Salaam last week, the association chairman, Moustafa Khataw, said many customers have developed a tendency of not paying on time for services rendered.

He said most of them pay credit at least one month after getting service which is not healthy on part of the service givers.

“When a customer gets an air ticket on credit we expect the same to pay shortly, but instead most of them pay us even after a month which is not healthy for business,” he said.

Khataw noted that as members of International Air Transport Association (IATA) they are supposed to pay commission to the organization every two weeks.

“If the customer fails to pay for the services, it becomes difficult for the operator to pay IATA on time. And you can imagine the consequences of that,” he said.

Khataw said the other challenge is the shortage of professional staff in the tour industry, adding that this has retarded development.

“This industry has very few professionals who can deliver. The best way to solve the problem is probably for the government to look East Africa,” he noted.

He said the national college of tourism which was set up recently would also help alleviate the problem of lack of professionals.
