Members of Parliament donated 10m/- to the national ladies football team (Twiga Stars) at a short ceremony held at the Karume Memorial Stadium yesterday.

Twiga Stars will play Namibia (the Brave Gladiators) in their African Women Championship (AWC) preliminary round second leg tie at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.

The national women’s team won 2-0 in the first leg played away at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek on January 14.

Should Twiga Stars manage to knock Namibia out of the preliminary round will face either Ethiopia or Egypt in the next stage of the biennial competition in women’s football for national teams which belong to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Speaking during the hand over ceremony, the minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Emannuel Nchimbi, urged Twiga Stars to continue a wave of winning to encourage people to come and help the team.

Out of the amount donated, 7m/- will be used as allowances for players and the technical bench and the remaining 3m/- will go to the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) to help the women team.

According to the deputy minister for Community Development, Gender and Children, Ummy Mwalimu, the Members of Parliament have promised to ‘buy’ the Twiga Stars’ first goal for 1m/- in their match against Namibia.

On his part, Twiga Stars head coach Charles Boniface Mkwasa thanked the legislators for their donation, saying it was a shot in the arm for the team and will help in their preparations for the AWC qualifier.

Meanwhile, Twiga Stars defeated the Members of Parliament team (Bunge) by 2-1 goals in a recreation match played later yesterday at the Karume Memorial Stadium.

Twiga Stars were the first to score through Fatuma Mustapha in the 5th minute.

The national ladies soccer team added the second ten minutes later through Mwanahamisi Omar.

The legislators got their consolation goal through Adam Malima in the 25th minute.
