Govt: We shall settle outstanding teachers` debts this month

The Government has promised to pay 52 billion debt owed to teachers as part of their salary arrears by June 30, the Minister for Education and Vocational Training Shukuru Kawambwa said during a meeting with members of the Parliamentary Committee for social services in Dar es Salaam ydate the government has paid Sh21.5 billion to teachers as initial payment in April this year. The minister urged prompt payment of teachers’ salaries to avoid further accumulation.

Districts like Kongwa, Dodoma, Kilosa and Chamwino have not completed did not complete paying of debts for lack of money of money. More than Sh4 million is required to pay the teachers in the four districts.

Meanwhile, the government now ha an institute called Teachers Professional Board that will ensure every teacher in Tanzania is administered properly to make them work efficiently. The Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI) appointed a team decided to revise the teacher’s debts and the latter found that Sh52 billion is owed to teachers.

The aim is to make all staff files are computerized, the focus being to manage the transfer of staff and work of their medical services, vacation and training. Every council is expected to own budget from which the teachers would be paid. The authorities have directed councils to have the teacher’s debt register so as to keep the proper records.
