Fashion and design industry is booming at incredible pace as Dar es Salaam city is gearing up to hold inaugural Fashion Festival or two days this weekend.

About fifty famous Tanzanian retain stores and fashion designers are expected to showcase their state of the art patterns in the fashion industry.

A co-founder of the Dar Fashion Festival (DFF), Lucy Naivasha told journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the event

would expose best clothing, footwear and other fashion accessories available in the country at discounted prices.

She said the festival is expected to draw some 5,000 fashion fans and that the entrance for buyers would be 2,000/- of which twenty percent will go to fund the “Artisan’s Promise’ -a local fund designed to support “completely new” local fashion designers to develop their concepts.

The co-founder noted that the festival would give the industry the necessary mileage that it deserves as an important sector in boosting the economy.

“After all, fashion merchandise is well recognized as one of the four basic necessities of a physical wellbeing besides food, water and shelter,” she insisted noting that in some countries, the fashion industry contributes considerably to the country’s gross domestic product, GDP.

“In Tanzania, the sector employs thousands of people and it’s high time we give it the credit it deserves,” she emphasized.

Speaking on the uniqueness of the festival, Naivasha said the event will be the first of its kind by promoting the concept of eco-friendly festivals in the country.

“We will not allow the use of plastic bags for purchase and instead will use brown bags that can easily decompose. We will also have recycled bins around the event’s surroundings to trash plastic bottles that will be left unused at the event.
