A taxi driver from Tengeru area, Juma Ally (32) is reported to have been kidnapped by unknown people in an incident linked to ongoing political campaigns for the Arumeru East by-election.

This comes two days before Meru residents cast their votes to elect a parliamentarian, who will fill the vacancy left by the late Jeremiah Sumari.

Arusha regional police commander (RC) Thobias Andengenye confirmed the incident, saying Ally was first hit by a sharp object and badly injured.

He said the incident occurred on March 27 at about 20:00 in Usa River town, when he met four people, who hired his taxi and wanted to go to Makumira area a kilometre away from Usa River.

“But when they reached at Makumira area, the suspects asked him to stop the car and hit him with the sharp object before robbing him all his belongings including a mobile phone, some money and the car,” the RPC said, adding the taxi driver, was dumped in a ditch.

According to Andengenye, the taxi driver was rescued by good Samaritans, who took him to Arumeru District Hospital in Tengeru area.

In another incident, one of the Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) campaign officials, Omary Abdul, is also reportedly missing for almost five days, a situation that has caused his family and his party in general to panic.

The RPC said the police were still investigating the matter and would be able to talk about it later.
