Turgid fort buoys Azam

10th February 2012
Azam FC

Should Azam FC cruise into this seasons’ Mainland premiership title, then the team’s defensive line-up will be highly credited with the success.

Azam is the only top flight side up to the 16th round to have conceded paltry a single digit number of goals, six in total.

The team’s defenders have been maintaining a good coordination between themselves to keep at bay strikers in safeguarding their goal.

The turgidity in the defence has also been inspirational for the team to concede only two losses, same as Simba and holders Yanga.

Maintaining a clean sheet has been the team’s goalkeepers particularly Mwadini Ali who has been outstanding between the posts to save his team.

With ten rounds to play before winding up the premiership season, most of the coaches from other teams are still contemplating on how best to set up a formation that would tear apart Azam’s fortress.

Conceding six goals in 16 matches must be a remarkable success in the premiership, a feat not easy to be attained.

Holders Yanga have conceded 13 goals in as many matches while second placed Simba allowed ten goals to pass beyond Juma Kaseja, the country’s high rated custodian for the moment.

Azam’s formidability is what keeps fans who are following the premiership matches with tenacious zeal, to stay spellbound weighing how Simba strikers would manage to seal off victory in the return leg tie to be played at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam tomorrow.

Though Simba striking force is relatively sharp to that of Azam having scored 25 goals in 16 matches, the paradox still lies on whether they might find a breakthrough past the ice-cream defenders.

Azam’s defensive strength is what makes tomorrow’s encounter to be a tension-packed one.

The teams drew during the first leg played at the same venue last year but the ice cream makers look to be force to reckon with when it comes to shuffle cards against league giants.

Azam, with a strong quest to win their maiden premiership title since winning promotion into the top flight berth in 2008/9 season, has bragged to maintain a winning streak in realizing their dream.

Azam, trailing two points adrift of both Yanga and Simba in the standings table might be at the helm of the standings should they post a win over Simba.

The two-point difference between Azam and the city rivals has made the title chase to be tight at this stage.
