5th April 2012

Zanzibar Heroes are expected to compete in the ‘World Cup’ championship earmarked for countries that have no FIFA membership.

Twelve countries are lined up for the championship to be staged in Kurdistan from May 29 through June.

Zanzibar Football Association’s information officer Munir Zachariah confirmed of the Heroes participation as the soccer association is making preparations for the team.

ZFA executive committee has appointed Ahmed Morocco as the head coach to be assisted by Pemba-based trainer Hafidh Muhidin.

Assa Khamis has been appointed as a manager of the team while Mohammed Mwinyi becomes a physician.

Zachariah said Zanzibar must feel honored to get such an opportunity as all expenses will be borne by the tournament organisers.

The ZFA official said coaches have been advised to workout a training programme such that they form a formidable side to compete in the championship.

He said coaches should select competent players based on merit for good representation.

“This championship is very important for improving football standard of the Isles national team,” said the ZFA spokesman.

The organizers have accepted the task of footing bills for return tickets, accommodation and other expenses, as confirmed by Zachariah.

Zanzibar’s FIFA membership bid collapsed last year when the world governing body declared it ineligible.
