A Mobile bus ticketing service has now been made possible in the country whereby passengers can acquire tickets at the prices set by the Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (Sumatra).
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the managing director of Mobile Ticketing Limited, Albert Muchuruza, the service will be undertaken in collaboration with cellphone service providers and bus companies going to up-country regions and those going outside the country.
“The service charge is 78/- whereby every subscriber of Vodacom, Airtel and Zantel will be able to access the service through M-Pesa, Z-Pesa and Airtel Money”, Muchuruza explained.
He noted that the service will do away with the hassle passengers had to put up with at the Ubungo bus terminal where bus touts were an irritating nuisance.
According to him, it will also eliminate theft of passengers’ property at the bus terminal and hiked fares charged by middlemen who tend to raise the fares in order to collect money illegally from passengers, especially during the holiday seasons.
He stressed that through the electronic ticketing service, passengers will be assured of getting their bus tickets wherever they are located, provided the area is covered by any of telecommunication networks in the country.
For her part, sales and marketing manager of Metro Coach Bus Nancy Mtenda called on Tanzanians to use the service in order to avoid unnecessary disturbances, especially theft at the bus terminal.
Mtenda said, “The service provides all the necessary details for the purchase of a ticket, including seat number, serial number, bus registration number, date and time of departure. So, there no need to be physically at the bus terminal”.
Meanwhile, ten buses are already using the system, namely Metro, Prince, Muro, Saibaba, Ngorika, ABS, Zuberi , NBS and Spider which have got routes going to Mwanza, Arusha, Tabora, Mtwara, Singida, Dodoma and neighbouring countries.
The service provider said he would expand the service to other regions in due time.
