Lobbyists have called for the need to make some few amendments to the current constitution to enable the country come up with an independent National Electoral Commissions (NEC) that will oversee not only the general elections but also the referendum towards a new constitution.
The call was made in Dar es Salaam yesterday by staff members of the Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) at an in- house training on the constitution making process.
A legal officer in charge of Elections and Parliament Watch Merick Luvinga said there has been a public outcry over the current NEC, saying leaving the same organ to oversee the referendum may lead to people shunning away from the process as has been the trend in general elections.
“There are people who have lost faith in elections as they assume that the exercise can neither be free nor fair due to the current NEC. If we allow the very same commission to oversee the referendum, we may not end up with a constitution we want as it very likely that it may end up representing the views of only a few people as it has been before,” said Luvinga.
