The Boxing Federation (BFT) plans to field a formidable team that would qualify for the 2016 Brazil Olympic Games.

The body’s secretary general Makore Mashaga said his federation plans to launch an ambitious strategic plan later this year.

The BFT official could not disclose where and when they will launch the plan saying discussions are still underway.

He said the launch of the four-year plan will help his association to easily reach its goals and it will also help BFT to work closely together with the Government, Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) and the cooperate world.

“The ultimate goal of the BFT is to ensure that the country competes in Rio 2016 Olympic Games with qualified boxers. We want to send boxers who can compete for medals, we hope the strategic plan will act as our blueprint”, he said.

Mashaga also said currently BFT is organising more youth boxing tournaments, coaches and umpires trainings.

Meanwhile, Mashaga said national team youth boxers are attending trainings in preparation for the next year’s Youth Olympic Games to be hosted by China.

He said the youth games in China will help the country prepare well for the 2016 Olympic Games.

“We will have Youth Olympic Games in China next year, the youth games will polish boxers who can represent the country at the Brazil Games and other international events” he said.

No Tanzanian boxer has in the past won an Olympic medal despite other having excelled in high-profile international events.
