Tanzanian athlete Sarah Kavina huffed to the finishing line first to win this year’s edition of the Bamako ten kilometer races held on Sunday.

Featuring top athletes from the continent, Kavina did not disappoint in the event also competed by another Tanzanian participant, Mashaka Masumbuko.

Athletics Tanzania’s (AT) secretary general Suleiman Nyambui announced the outcome of the Bamako championship that also included longest distance event, 42 kilometre Marathon.

Kavina edged out other competitors in the race category specially designed for women athletes only.

Nyambui said Kavina would benefit from undisclosed money prize set aside by the event’s sponsors, Bank of Africa, BOA.

“We congratulate and remain satisfied with Kavina’s achievement in the event that saw only two Tanzanians competing,” said Nyambui.

Kavina’s male counterpart in the show Masumbuko, who featured in the full Marathon race, failed to impress.

Nyambui attributed Masumbuko’s lacklustre show as a result of bad luck after sustaining muscle pains midway during the race to pull out of the competition.

Both Kavina and Masumbuko are expected to return by tomorrow’s flight.
