The eleventh edition of the Kilimanjaro Marathon was officially launched in Dar es Salaam on Friday night as the event gets underway on March 3, 2013 in Moshi.
The deputy director of sports development in the ministry for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Juliana Yassoda, presided over the launching.
She praised sponsors for their joint efforts to highlight the athletics fraternity and promote tourism in the country.
Yassoda urged more sponsors to invest in sports and called athletes to start preparations to excel.
Tanzania Breweries Limited’s marketing director Kushilla Thomas said her firm is once again the main sponsor of the event which continues to grow every year while seeking to expose domestic athletes.

“Getting the very best runners from many countries helps us to show the world what the marathon is all about. Promoting and encourage Tanzanian athletes is our main priority. For that reason, we have introduced a separate three million shillings prize purse for Tanzanian athletes who will finish first on both men and women categories of marathon,” he said.
The TBL official said the brewers will once again recognise athletes by rewarding them with good prize and their supporters through first class entertainment.
The prize for first to third winners in the men and women categories will be to the tune of ten million shillings.
The winners will take home 3m/- each, 1.5m/- for second placed as well as 850,000/- for third-placed winners.
