Three Tanzanian swimmers are expected to board a flight to Istanbul early next month to compete in the FINA-sanctioned world championship that gets underway December 12 at Sinam Erdem Arena.
Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) secretary general Noel Kiunsi said the athletic trio and a coach have made traveling reservations for the December 4 flight.
Kiunsi named the swimmers earmarked for the trip as Hilal Hilal, Ammaar Ghadiyali and Mariam Foum while Marcelino Ngalioma will double as coach and leader of the delegation.
The swimming team has been accorded a courtesy by FINA which is footing their return flight bills, accommodation and other upkeep while in Turkey.
The TSA official said his body is still looking for some funds to increase the number of the team members and where possible two more would join the trio.
The TSA official said the association is strongly convinced that the team would represent the country proudly and effectively.
He said the swimmers are young, dedicated and hardworking.
“We hope they will perform well at the championship and we are still looking at the possibility of getting 6m/- so that Adam Kitururu and Issa Rashid can join the team,” he said.
Kiunsi declined to say if the team will open residential camp, but only said all the swimmers are in top gear as they are undergoing training with their respective clubs perpetually.
The World Swimming Championship is held after every two years and the country swimmers performed poorly at the 2010 event which was held in Dubai.
