Burundi trounce Mainland

29th November 2012
Suleiam Ndikumana

Suleiman Ndikumana’s 53rd penalty was enough to hand the Mainland soccer team, Kilimanjaro Stars their first defeat of the Senior Challenge cup in a match played at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala yesterday.

The teams ended the first half on level terms as either side tried hard to find an opening goal.

It was in the second half that Mainland’s defender Shomari Kapombe slipped on his attempt to tackle Ndikumana inside the box that resulted in a spot kick.

The Mainland team pushed hard to find an equalizer but were denied by the expertise of Burundi defenders.

Poor pitch that was soaked backpedaled efforts by Mainland strikers to find an equalizer.

Kapombe was injured and replaced by Issa Rashid but the score line remained the same. John Bocco who scored two goals in a match against Sudan tried his best but lady luck would not smile.

Coach Kim Poulsen said his boys worked hard but it was a bad day as the team lost the game/. He congratulated Burundi for the victory but still said the team is not out yet. Mainland have their last group game against Somalia that lost their second game to Sudan by a lone goal in a match that preceded the Stars- Burundi one.

Following the victory Burundi have qualified into the last eight stage of the tournament as Mainland are third in their group.

Burundi and hosts Uganda are the teams that have confirmed their quarterfinal progression.

The Mainland tem has no option except to post a victory over Somalia in their final game.
