Russian athletics duo of Olga Konovalov and Natalia Popova excelled during the half marathon and five kilometre races staged in Zanzibar over the weekend.
While Konovalov claimed an outright victory in the 21 kilometres race, his country mate Popova won the five-kilometre showdown.
One of the organizers of the event, Mustapha Muhamed, said a big number of participants turned out in the event.
Muhamed said more events of similar magnitude would be organised in Zanzibar in an effort to promote athletics as well as improving tourist inflows.
“The Zanzibar half marathon is an event which on top of promoting athletics in the country it also promotes its tourist attractions. We will continue organising this event and it’s our plan to see it growing big and better,” he said.
He thanked the Russians for taking part at the event and said their presence at the event was very important to development of athletics in the country.
