The Minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Fenella Mukangara, yesterday launched the Uhuru Marathon to be held in Dar es Salaam tomorrow.
She said the Government is committed to see an increased number of international marathon events being staged to attract foreign competitors.
The Uhuru Marathon is organised by Intellectuals Communication Company aiming at promoting unity and peace in the country while marking the Independence Day to be celebrated on Sunday.
The minister said it’s a good development that the country is staging many marathon events.
She thanked the company for organizing the marathon which is staged in concurrence with the Independence Day celebrations.
She assured the organizers of the event that the Government will support them to achieve intended goals and also create a conducive environment so that people of all walks of life could take part at the event.
Speaking earlier, organizing firm’s director Innocent Melleck said the marathon also aims at promoting athletics.
Most of the domestic based and international athletes are expected to compete.
The organizing firm donated T-shirts to President Jakaya Kikwete and Speaker of the National Assembly Anne Makinda as a gesture for their contribution to athletics development in the country. Melleck asked the minister to convey a message to the President so that he could be the Patron of the Uhuru Marathon.
