The Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) has been ranked the best in the country by University Ranking Academic Performance (URAP) Centre due to the number of researches it has published.
MUHAS also came third in East Africa behind Uganda’s Makerere University and Kenya’s University of Nairobi.
Other national universities that were ranked behind MUHAS include the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) and Sokoine University of Agriculture as second and third respectively.
In a statement issued yesterday in Dar es Salaam by MUHAS Public Relations Officer Helen Mtui, the URAP assessed academic performance of the institution using several qualitative and quantitative indicators, and through them ranked the various universities.
The statement said URAP used indicators such as the number of research publications, the frequency of their citation by others, the scientific productivity, the journal citation impact and international collaboration.
The indicators help at measuring current scientific productivity, research impact, research quality and international expectance of the respective University.
The system enables to rank world universities in terms of their position globally, regionally and at the country level.
Last year three Universities in Tanzania appeared on this ranking system with MUHAS at the top followed by UDSM and SUA in second and third positions respectively.
Among the East African Universities, only five appeared on the list, with three being from Tanzania, while the rest are from Uganda and Kenya.
MUHAS has continued to improve and has moved up remarkably in the global position as well as at the county level.
With such results, MUHAS has ascended from number 1736 last year to 1610 among the World top 2000 Universities. Domino effect places MUHAS at number 41 in African Universities.
University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) Research Laboratory was established at Informatics Institute of Middle East Technical University in 2009.
Main objective of URAP is to develop a ranking system for the world universities based on academic performance which was determined by quality and quantity of scholarly publications. In line with this objective yearly World Ranking of 2000 Higher Education Institutions have been released since 2010.
