Policeman killed in Dar shootout

At least one police officer was killed and two others severely injured yesterday in Dar es Salaam following a shootout with unidentified people suspected to be armed robbers.

The Dar es Salaam Special Zone, Acting Regional Police Commander, Msangi Ahmed confirmed the incident and went on to identify the deceased officer as one Constable Mwinyijuma (G2641) who died on the scene after sustaining a fatal head wound.

His collegues survived and have been identified as (F9922) Amelia, who was shot in his right leg and Constable Mjafari (G2461) who sustained a body shot to the mid-section around his abdomen.

Msangi, who also doubles as the special zone head of Regional Criminal Investigation (RCO) reported that the wounded policemen were initially treat at Temeke Hospital are referred to Muhimbili National Hospital for further medical attention.

As explained by the acting Regional Police Commander, around 1pm the police received a tip reporting that thugs with intent to commit a criminal act.

“…detectives were dispatched and patrols placed on alert…” he explained.

The amber alert paid off as a suspicious vehicle was sighted along Nyerere Road, a Toyota Carina registration number T319 BSY. Detectives pursued until they reached Mchichani area in Temeke when the occupants of the vehicle stopped and opened fire.

"…it was unfortunate that our officers were injured…and we honour Mwinyijuma and his family as a National hero who died in the line of duty…” the acting RPC lamented.

Five are in custody in connection with the shooting and murder of the officer. The force has pledged not to rest until the ‘cop killers’ are brought to justice.
