One-UN calls for earlier start of general election monitoring

The One-UN system Representative in Tanzania, Alberic Kacou, has underscored the need for general election monitoring process to start much earlier than just a day or so to the elections day.

Kacou made the remarks over the weekend in Dar es Salaam during a closed door stakeholder’s consultative meeting on the 2010 multi-party general election monitoring preparations.

The UN representative said the consultative meeting; the first of its kind brought together representatives from the Tanzania traditional donor community and the country's National Electoral Commission (NEC).

Tanzania is one of the eight countries under One UN initiative. Others include Albania, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Pakistan, Rwanda, Uruguay, and Viet Nam.

The One-UN initiative was established in 2007 to respond to the challenges of a changing world and test how the UN family can provide development assistance in a more coordinated way in the eight countries.
