Mkapa salutes new pope

President Benjamin Mkapa has sent a congratulatory message to Pope Benedict XVI on his elevation to the papacy.
“On behalf of my family, the people and the government of the United Republic of Tanzania, I send to Your Holiness our most sincere and warm congratulations for the great confidence that the College of Cardinals has reposed in you by speedily electing you to the High Office of Sovereign Pope,” President Mkapa said in his message.
He said the Pope ascended to the throne at a difficult time as too many people in the world have lost hope and endure constant threats to their physical, spiritual, social and economic beings in addition to growing global insecurity and injustice.
“The process and outcome of globalisation is patently unfair. Poverty and conflict continue to make Africa a scar on the conscience of the world,” the President added.
He said he looked forward to continue working closely and co-operatively with the Holy See under the leadership of the Pope in addressing these and other pressing issue of our time.
“Please accept, Your Holiness, the assurances of my highest consideration, and our best wishes for Your Holiness’ Pontificate,” the President said.
