Six armed bandits ambushed a passenger bus in Ikwiriri, Rufiji District, Coast Region, on Monday and made away with property worth millions of shillings, including cash money.

Coastal Regional Police Commander Peter Kivuyo told reporters that the incident took place at around 3:00 pm near Chumbwi village, on Kilwa Road.

The bus was heading for Dar es Salaam from Lindi.

Kivuyo said the bandits who are still at large carried a shortgun and a pistol.

They stopped the bus with registration number T 556 ADB and dashed in, pointing guns to the passengers and forcing them to obey orders.

'After firing in the air, the scared passengers surrendered their belongings.

They were robbed of 7.9m/- cash, 19,500 U.S. dollars and seven mobile phones,' explained Kivuyo.

The RPC appealed to the general public to tip off the police should they happen to have any clue to the incident.

Meanwhile, officials from the Wildlife Department in Ikwiriri have arrested two people found in illegal possession of smoked elephant meat on transit to Dar es Salaam.

The meat was carried in a bus with registration number T 362 AFQ Isuzu plying between Kibiti and Dar es Salaam.

The police commander said the arrest was made earlier this week.

He named the suspects as Sudi Hamadi (24) and Athumani Mpili (30) both operators of the bus.
