The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ruling party CCM in Zanzibar has forwarded the names of President Amani Abeid Karume and Dr Mohamed Gharib Bilal as presidential aspirants to the party’s NEC in Dodoma.
According to Isles CCM Publicity Secretary Vuai Ali Vuai, the NEC’s special meeting had two agenda.
We discussed the two CCM contestants from the Isles as well as the current political situation, said Vuai.
He said the NEC members were satisfied with both contestants and therefore forwarded their names to Dodoma as possible candidates for the Zanzibar presidential race.
However, an impeccable source from inside the meeting told The Guardian that some committee members had attempted to persuade Dr Bilal to drop his presidential bid to allow President Karume to serve a second and final five-year term as well as avert a split within the party.
However, Dr Bilal refused to budge and all was left to the NEC in Dodoma.
