For Tanzania to realise Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) goals, extra efforts must be put in place urgently, according to non-profit organisation Tanzania Coalition on Debt and Development (TCDD).
TCDD Co-ordinator Chamba Kajenge said at the weekend in Dar es Salaam a through study done by his organisation on the implementation of the strategy in education and health services has revealed a big shortfall.
'All indicators indicate realising the target as things are a tall order,' he said.
Kajenge said in education sector even in Dar es Salaam Region problems like classroom shortages have not been solved altogether.
'There is also an urgent need to recruit more teachers.
The student teacher ratio in some schools is flabbergasting,'he said adding Biharamulo District had the least teachers in Kagera Region.
He said reaching the goals while so many schools did not have essential facilities like electricity, water and toilets was merely a dream.
On health sector, he said there was marked lack of community awareness countrywide.
'Poverty surrounding many families, poor living conditions and social services lead to spread of air and waterborne diseases,' he lamented.
'Due to poor medical services the majority of the poor now depend on traditional therapies,' Kajenge said.
The number of health facilities in the country does not match with the needs of the populace.
'We don’t have sufficient health facilities to serve the populace without strain,' he said.
