'Arrogance to blame for the DIT standoff'

The failure by the management of the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT) to run the institute in accordance with the law is the cause of the current crisis at the college.

Chairman of the Tanzania Higher Learning Institutions Students’ Organisation (TAHLISO), Manyonyi Bwire, made the observation in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday.

The law gives the institute the mandate to set its own examinations and grants its own awards but DIT management has failed to implement the regulation, he told the press shortly after emerging from a meeting convened by TAHLISO to find solution to DIT’s crisis.

He said after receiving a report from DIT Students’ Organisation providing a clear picture of the conflict, TAHLISO decided to form a committee to follow up the matter.

“The Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology Students’ Organisation (DITSO) told us that on Saturday last week it presented to the PM's office a report regarding the existing conflict,” he said, adding that the reply would be the Premier's starting point to work on the issue.

Meanwhile, DITSO President Joseph Ghati has condemned the decision by the DIT administration to stop providing food to about 800 students who are enrolled for Full Technician Certificate (FTC).

“The act is inhuman,” he told The Guardian, adding that since last weekend, the administration blocked food supply to the institute.

“Denying food to people is the highest form of cruelty in this world. We ask the authority to re-consider the decision,” he said.

For almost two years now, DIT students have been complaining about poor modalities of setting examinations, poor administration of examinations at different levels and the failure to follow the college's curriculum.
