Building the capacity for Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA) staff is paramount so as to enable the body to implement the Food and Drugs Act of 2003.

TFDA Director General Margreth Sigonda said on Monday in Dar es Salaam, her institution has been training its workers on investigations procedures, administration of court proceedings among other things to improve their handling of implementation of the Act.

According to her, in the past TFDA have been nabbing people who have contravened the Act only to lose out in the courts because its workers lacked knowledge on investigations and court proceedings.

’’Food is very sensitive to the health of the nation. It needs high supervision and that is why we are building our worker’s capacity so that they can recognize and successfully prosecute anyone flouting the Act,’’ she said.

She said the law mandated TFDA to ensure food imports are safe.
Sigonda was closing a two-month training workshop for 13 TFDA officers.

The training would enable the trainees to conduct investigations, open files and administer court proceedings accordingly, she said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Luther Mbutu said TFDA should enforce Food and Drugs Act of 2003 as per the law.

’’That is why it is important to train TFDA workers on the techniques used in the investigations and administrations of court proceedings,’’ he said.
