Voters have up to the end of this month to correct their names in the permanent voter register, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) announced yesterday.

Speaking during a meeting with representatives of registered political parties in Dar es Salaam, NEC chairman, Justice Lewis Makame, said voters would be required to correct their names and polling stations before July 31.

Justice Makame said the deadline also affects people who had moved to other wards or constituencies and those who had lost their voter identification cards.
’’NEC would like to remind all voters that the exercise will go on until July 31.

There will be no extension after the deadline,’’ Justice Makame said.

’’Those who have moved to other wards or constituencies are supposed to report to the returning officers or assistant returning officers in the respective constituencies before July 31,’’ he added.

NEC also appealed to leaders of all political parties to adhere to the election code of conduct to ensure free and fair polls.

Makame reminded leaders of political parties that it would be against the law for them to breach the regulations governing elections in the run up to the October 30 polls.

NEC convened yesterday’s meeting to discuss the code of conduct with all political parties ahead of the campaigns that start on August 22.

Present were CUF secretary-general Seif Sharif Hamad and CCM director of elections Paulo Sozigwa and a Forum for Democracy (Ford) representative, Ramadhan Mzee.

Chadema was represented by its director of elections Erasto Shija and NCCR-Mageuzi by secretary-general Polisya Mwaiseje.

Other political parties represented at the meeting were UDP, UMD, UDPD, CHAUSTA, TADEA, Sauti ya Umma, Jahazi Asilia, Demokrasia Makini and TLP.
