At least eight passengers died and 41 others were injured in a motor accident at Mlalo, Lushoto district in Tanga Region, on Monday.

Tanga Regional Police Commander Faith Amour told reporters yesterday that the accident occurred when an overloaded lorry that was speeding from Mlalo to Lushoto overturned at Mlalo, killing five women and three men on the spot.

Amour said the bodies of the deceased are yet to be identified. The bodies were taken to Lushoto Hospital mortuary, while the injured passengers were admitted to Same Hospital.

The RPC also said that some of the passengers who sustained serious injuries were transferred to Bombo Regional Hospital.

She, however, said that she would announce the names of the deceased today after their next of kin have been informed.

The RPC said that the driver of the lorry is still at large. He took off after the accident.

The police are still looking for the driver and the owner of the lorry, she said.
