Vuga Resident Magistrate’s Court in Zanzibar failed yesterday to hear a criminal case involving the Urban/West Regional Police Commander and the Zanzibar Immigration boss who are facing a contempt of court charges.
A warrant of arrest against the two was issued on Tuesday but junior police officers developed cold on being asked to apprehend the two senior civil servants.
RPC George Kizuguto, and the Immigration Officer, Ali Khamis were charged with contempt of court by Resident Magistrate Khamis Kombakono for failing to appear in court on Tuesday.
Kizuguto, however, presented himself in court yesterday.
The court also blamed Kizuguto and Khamis for keeping an Omani national, Nasser Rashid Nasser, in custody in violation of the court orders.
The Immigration Department took Nasser to court for being in Zanzibar illegally after the department made several attempts to deport him.
An Immigration official, Ali Daudi, told the court yesterday that his boss had travelled to Dodoma to attend the ongoing budget debate in parliament, where Home Affairs Minister is expected to table his ministry’s budget estimates for 2005/6 financial year this Friday.
Since one of the parties is still absent, we cannot continue with the case. I will adjourn it to July 22. On this date, the case will be heard even in his absence, the magistrate said.
