Tanzania has been enjoying Vatican support in education and health services since independence, the government said Tuesday.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Philemon Luhanjo thanked the Catholic Church, saying Tanzania continues to enjoy its support in education and health services.

Luhanjo was speaking at a short ceremony to bid farewell to the outgoing Apostolic Nuncio of the Vatican, Archbishop Luigi Pezzuto who has completed his tour of duty in the country.

Luhanjo said that Tanzania had been enjoying continuous Vatican support and cited recently built schools in Migori and Iringa, which were handed over to the government.

He said Tanzanians were enjoying health services through Catholic mission hospitals that were spread all over the country.

Luhanjo said Vatican had shown special concern in assisting HIV victims in the country by establishing healthcare centers.

Responding, Archbishop Pezzuto said the Vatican would continue to assist Tanzania in education and heath services.
