Govt to sponsor 1,427 for medicine degree

The government plans to sponsor 1,427 students for first degree course in medicine during this financial year, Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education Dr. Pius Ng’wandu told the National Assembly yesterday.
Presenting his ministry’s budget estimates for the 2005/2006 the Minister said that 1,060 students would be trained at Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS) and 367 would study in private universities.
Mr Speaker, the government also plans to reintroduce the former government system of sponsoring students abroad for specific fields of study which are not available in the country, Dr Ng’wandu said.
On expansion of the Institute of Journalism and Mass Communication, the minister said that the government would build five classrooms with a capacity to accommodate 480 students.
In order to strengthen the college’s radio station, the government will also buy an Outside Broadcasting Van (OBVAN) and a transmitter, he told the House.
Regarding the University of Dar es Salaam, the minister said that the main campus would enroll 3,440 students for first degree courses out of whom 420 would pursue degrees in education.
He also told the House that in the 2005/06 financial year, the government intends to introduce two new programs at the Open University of Tanzania.
He mentioned the programmes as BSc. in Computer Science and MSc in Environmental Studies.
Reacting to the minister’s estimates, the Chairman of the Social Services Committee Omar Kwaangw’ noted that the 30m/- which the ministry had set aside for National Research Registry was not enough.
He advised the government to allocate more money for the in the coming budget.
