By Guardian Reporter, Dodoma

The refusal of teachers to take up appointments in remote secondary schools is as a result of acute shortage of staff quarters in many rural areas’ education facilities, Minister for Education and Culture Joseph Mungai, has said.

The minister, responding to a question asked by Paul Kimiti (MP-Sumbawanga) in the House yesterday, said the problem of teachers who refuse to work in remote secondary schools was ’’complicated’’ because of the validity of their reasons.

Kimiti wanted to know the government’s stand on the problem.
’’The problem of teachers who refuse to work in remote areas is complicated…but lack of houses for teachers is the main reason,’’ he said.

To solve the problem, Mungai said his ministry, all the same will act sternly against any teachers who defy government’s appointment to remote workstations.

The minister also assured the government was in the process of employing all secondary school teachers who have completed their studies in the past years.

’’We have also decided to employ form six and university graduates who have not been trained as teachers. However, we will give them intensive induction courses before we employ them,’’ he said.

The minister revealed that about 374 untrained teachers were taking induction course at Morogoro and Butimba teachers’ colleges to take up the challenge in different schools.

He said also his ministry was making arrangements to re-employ teacher who have reached retirement age on contract basis.
