Not for profit private primary and secondary schools from this financial year will get government subsidies, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs John Chiligati has said.
The government will give 10,000/- capitation grant to each student in non-profit making schools, the deputy minister told the House.
The deputy minister made the disclosure while answering a question by Raphael Mlolwa (Kahama CCM) on behalf of Education and Culture Minister Joseph Mungai.
Mlolwa had wanted to know whether the government had any plan to support private schools.
Chiligati said the government would also continue assisting private schools under the primary school (PEDP) and secondary school (SEDP) development programmes.
He said the government would provide subsidies for construction, of classrooms and teachers houses in private schools catering for the disabled people.
For classroom construction the government will offer 7m/- and for a teachers house 9m/-, he said.
The government would continue to support private schools in terms of teachers training, curriculum, sup ervision, registration and preparation of national examinations, he said.
Iringa Urban MP, Monica Mbega (CCM), in her contribution said 10,000/- capitation grant was too low.
She asked the government to increase the amount and design ways to assist orphans and disabled students in private schools.
Chiligati said and called on the MP to be patient as the programme of subsidising students in private schools had just started.
Let us accept this small amount for now. Definitely, there will be increments gradually, he said.
There was in place a special programme for assisting orphans and disabled students in government schools, Chiligati said.
He promised that the government would work out on a mechanism to help disadvantaged students in private schools as well.
