Hopes fade for divers lost off Zanzibar coast

The prospect of rescuing four Danish tourists and their Canadian scuba diving instructor who went missing four days ago off Zanzibar is diminishing, the local divers’ club said yesterday.

The five left with another group for a diving course on Saturday and were last seen under water near Pemba.

A statement by Swahili Divers said they were still searching for the five.

But ’we appreciate that after being missing for four days the chances of locating the divers alive are much reduced,’ it added.

The club recovered an inflatable vest belonging to one of the divers from a sandbank to the north of Pemba on Sunday.

They also received reports from searching aircraft that the divers’ air tanks had been seen in west Pemba.

”Apart from this, there has been no sign of the divers.

The circumstances surrounding their disappearance are a complete mystery.

The dive vessel never stopped observing the dive site, and our instructor ... was extremely experienced,” it said.
