Rakai District in Uganda has raised over 130 million Ugandan shillings (65m/-) to compensate about 450 people, who were affected by the re-demarcation exercise of the Uganda- Tanzania boarder.

Uganda’s Daily Monitor quoted LC5 Chairman Vincent Semakula Settuba yesterday as saying that the Ugandan government had given the district money to compensate the victims.

He made the revelation during a meeting for the affected boarder settlers at Nangoma village in Kakuuto sub-county.

”Beneficiaries will be compensated depending on the value of the property they lost,” Semakula said.

He said the money had been deposited at Kakuuto Micro-finance Co-operative and Saving Society Ltd.

”All beneficiaries are required to open accounts in this bank,” he said.

Over 1,000 people are expected to lose their Ugandan citizenship, as the new boarder line will place them in Tanzania.

In December 2000, the two countries solved the border dispute that was caused by a war in the late 1970s.
