Five people were killed and 18 others injured in a road accident involving three vehicles outside Moshi yesterday.

The dead in the accident at Chekereni, about 30 kilometres southeast of Moshi, were two Roman Catholic priests, a nun and two students.

Eyewitnesses said the accident took place at around 9am when a Buffalo Company Limited bus travelling to Dar es Salaam from Moshi grazed a lorry before colliding with a car travelling in the opposite direction, killing all those on board on the spot.

The bus, which was reportedly speeding at the time of the accident, pushed the mangled wreckage of the car about 100 metres, before overturning.

The dead were identified as Father Peter Baruti, Father Menance Kanyika, Sister Nakia Emiliana and Gaston Kimario and Immaculata Fue, who were studying at Chanjale Seminary in Mwanga District.

Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander Mohamed Awadh Chicco said the injured had been admitted to Mawenzi Hospital in Moshi. He blamed the accident on speeding.
