By Correspondent Charles ole Ngereza, Arusha

Arusha-based tanzanite dealer Dimitris Tsakaris has committed suicide by shooting himself through the head.

The Greek national killed himself on Sunday at his home at Olorien, Arusha Regional Police Commander James Kombe said yesterday.

He said Tsakaris, 58, locked himself in his room after telling his workers that he wanted to have a rest, but they were stunned when they heard a gun going off in the house a few minutes later.

The workers broke down the door to Tsakaris’ room and found him dead in a pool of blood with a smoking pistol beside him.

Kombe said preliminary investigations into the suicide showed that Tsakaris owed fellow businessmen in Arusha tens of millions of shillings, adding that a crippling mountain of debts was partly behind his decision to take his own life.

He said the Greek was also on trial for fraud and forgery at the Arusha Resident Magistrate’s Court which was scheduled to deliver judgment yesterday.

Tsakaris was a diabetic who was living alone after his family moved to Britain a few years ago.

’’Investigations are still going on, but it seems that the deceased was a troubled fellow who decided to take his own life,’’ the RPC said.

Tsakaris’ body was moved to the Mount Meru Hospital Mortuary and the Greek Embassy has already been notified of the death, according to Kombe.
