Striking Shelys Pharmaceutical workers resumed work yesterday after the management agreed to meet some of their demands.

A return-to-work agreement was hammered out on Wednesday at a meeting between the workers’ representatives, the management and Dar es Salaam regional labour officers.

The firm agreed to raise daily wages from 1,550/- to 2,000/- in addition to free lunch.

Speaking to The Guardian yesterday, one of the workers’ representatives, Gervas Matiko, said they had agreed to the terms and resumed work pending further consultations.

Matiko said some of their demands would be met later.

’The weeklong strike is now over as most of us have accepted the new package although we are yet to seal the deal by signing the contract for it to become effective,’ Matiko said.

He added that the management of the firm is preparing a schedule for all workers before full-steam operations resume on Monday.

On Thursday last week 600-plus workers downed their tools to press for a review of their pay packages and better terms of service.

The workers complained of mistreatment, exploitation, low wages and poor services.
