Three women, two of them journalists, made it to the next Parliament after winning Special Seats slots, albeit in contrasting styles, during yesterday’s CCM nominations.

Topping the list of winners was Community Development Gender and Children Minister, Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, who retained her Special Seat unopposed during yesterday’s CCM Women’s Wing (UWT) nominations.

Journalists Amina Chifupa and Lucy Manyenga became MPs on Special Seats on CCM’s Youth Wing category.

Chifupa, a radio broadcaster and Manyenga, a long serving journalist, won the hotly contested elections held yesterday by the youth-wing’s general council.

They beat seven other contestants, including popular musician, Vick Kamata, from Mwanza.

Dr Migiro was endorsed at the party’s UWT governing council, which met under the supervision of CCM Secretary General Philip Mangula. Dr Migiro, however, will sit in the House on Universities Special Seats.

UWT Secretary-General Halima Mamuya said Dr Migiro was escorted to Dodoma by fellow academics from the University of Dar es Salaam, Sokoine University of Agriculture and Mzumbe University.

Dr Migiro had no opponent.Mamuya said that a total of 78 women vied for the Special Seats on UWT General ticket after the process was concluded at regional level.

Out of the lot, 63 were from Mainland and 15 were from the Isles.

\’There are only 15 seats to be contested for, 10 from the Mainland and Five from Zanzibar.\’

The UWT governing council also conducted nominations for Special Seats for workers’ unions, NGOs, the disabled and the youth.

During the youths’ nominations, the returning officer, Faida Mohamed Bakari, announced the results for Tanzania Mainland, which showed Mayenga having won with 74 votes and Chifupa 61.

Chifupa is a broadcaster with Clouds FM, while Manyenga is journalist with Business Times.

In Zanzibar, Bakari romped home ahead of Amina Mbarouk with 62 votes, while her sole rival Mwanaidi Kasim had 49 votes.
