Hundreds of Dar es Salaam residents yesterday attended the funeral of Hansa Jayanti Rajani, the wife of businessman Jayanti Rajani, who died on Saturday aged 69.

In his message of condolence, President Benjamin Mkapa described the Rajani family as important contributors to the development of the nation and ruling party, CCM.

’I received with shock the news of the death of your wife,’ the President said in his brief message read on his behalf by his representative, Nsa Kaisi.

Apart from being the wife of the famous businessman, Hansa was famous in her own right.

Speaking at the service, CCM vice-chairman (Mainland), John Malecela, said Hansa loved the poor and her family contributed generously towards the education and welfare of orphans.

’Our mother (Hansa) liked the poor, she visited orphans,’ he said.

Judge Mark Bomani, who had known her for many years, described her as ’truly great lady who won many hearts because of her humility.’

’She was a person of great indolence, humility and simplicity,’he said.

Representatives of women and members of CCM Women-Wing (UWT), Mama Rose Rupia, told mourners that the late Hansa was generous.

She likened her to a saint because of humility and simplicity.

Sir Andy Chande, said, ’She was a lady with incomparable humility and compassion,’ he said.

Scores of high profile personalities joined mourners who turned up to pay their last respects to Hansa at the Rajani family’s Sea View residence yesterday.

They included the chairman of the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation and former OAU Secretary-General, Dr Salim Ahmed Salim, and the Executive Chairman of IPP Group of companies, Reginald Mengi.

The others were cabinet ministers, Joseph Mungai and William Lukuvi, former prime minister, Justice Joseph Warioba, religious leaders and members of the diplomatic corps.
