A fire broke out in an army barracks in Arusha on Thursday, killing a three-year-old girl. Thirty families were rendered homeless after the evening fire at Azimio barracks for the Tanzania Peoples Defence Forces destroyed their houses.
Arusha Regional Police Commander James Kombe identified the girl who died in the fire as Caroline Mwita.
He said the girl was asleep when the fire broke out and owing to her tender age, she was unable to escape the ravaging fire.
The fire, which its source is still unknown, reduced to ashes a total of 17 blocks that accommodate about 30 families.
Eyewitness said the fire started from one of the houses and spread rapidly to the other houses in the barracks.
It took police and Arusha city fire brigade almost five hours to put it out.
Thank God, we managed to rescue some property, Kombe said and added that the exact value of the property damaged was still unknown.
He said that police and experts from the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) were investigating the cause of the fire.
