The Coast Regional Commissioner, Ditopile Mzuzuri, has called for the naming and shaming of corrupt NGOs dealing with anti-HIV/Aids activism.

’’Some of the organisations dealing with HIV/Aids issues misuse funds intended for the fight against the deadly disease,’’ he said while opening a workshop on lobbying and advocacy for anti-HIV/Aids NGOs in Kibaha.

The workshop, which was co-organised by Advocacy Network on HIV/Aids in Tanzania, brought together participants from local NGOs to learn techniques and methodologies used in lobbying and advocacy for policy changes in their respective areas.

’’The government cannot police your members but you as a network of these NGOs are better placed to monitor new NGOs which could spoil the good work,’’ he said.

He further said the government supported NGOs fighting the deadly disease.

’’I commend NGOs giving the government a helping hand in the fight against HIV/Aids.’’

In underlining the importance of co-operation in the fight against HIV/Aids, Mzuzuri gave an example of two dogs, which were given food at two different points and directions while joined with a single rope in their necks.

He said each dog wanted to go for its food at the same time but none succeeded as they were joined together by the rope.

It was only after the dogs agreed to share one plate and move to the next that they did manage to eat both plates, the RC said.

’’Confrontations and disdain among anti-HIV/Aids activists on which way should be used in fighting the pandemic is not helpful to anyone. What is needed is collaboration,’’ he added.

He said that few unfaithful NGOs dealing with HIV/Aids could tarnish Tanzania’s good image in the eyes of the donor community.
