By Mwinyi Sadallah, Zanzibar

More than 90m/- meant in salaries for members of the Zanzibar anti-smuggling unit (KMKM) has been stolen. The money was stolen from the unit’s headquarters at Kibweni on the outskirts of Zanzibar.

Mjini Magharib Regional Police Commander George Kizuguto said the money was stolen on Friday night when unknown people broke into the strong room and made away with 92.2 m/-.

Kizuguto said that 19 members of the unit, 12 accountants and seven security guards had been arrested in connection with the burglary.

He said the money was for KMKM officers who had not collected their salaries last month.

He said after the investigation, all officers suspected to have taken part in the theft, would be taken to court.

Kizuguto said that, until yesterday, no money had been recovered and police had launched investigations at the unit’s headquarters.

This is the second time for salaries for civil servants to be stolen in Zanzibar in the recent past.

Early this year, unknown people broke into the offices of the Ministry of Communications and Transport in Pemba and stole 34m/-, also meant for salaries.

A number of workers from the ministry were arrested and arraigned in court, but they were later acquitted for lack of evidence.
