Mbowe: Amend Constitution for parties to unite

2005-08-16 08:41:47
By Christina Mwangosi

CHADEMA’s presidential aspirant, Freeman Mbowe, has called for the country’s Constitution to be amended in order to give opposition parties the opportunity to unite.

Mbowe said some of the weaknesses found in the Constitution were an obstacle to unity among opposition parties, particularly in selecting a single candidate to contest for the presidential and other elective posts.

He said some Articles in the Constitution gave the president pervasive powers to make decisions regardless of their impact to the country.

Mbowe, who was speaking moments after his party congress had nominated him last Friday, said unity of opposition parties would give them an opportunity to nominate one aspirant to contest the presidency and other elective posts.

He said regardless of any obstacles made by the ruling party, opposition parties would continue to co-operate.

He called upon every citizen, regardless of his or her party, to vote during election day in order to get leaders who would bring about the country’s development.
