By Guardian Reporter

President Benjamin Mkapa leaves the country today for Gaborone, Botswana, where he will attend the annual meeting of heads of state and governments of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC).

The meeting will also be part of celebrations to mark the 25th Anniversary of the community since its inception in the early 1980’s.

This would be the last meeting that Mkapa attends in his capacity as the President of the United Republic of Tanzania as he is to leave the office after the October general election.

He is expected to seize the opportunity to bid farewell to other leaders in the sub-region on Thursday when the Summit comes to an end.

His wife, Anna Mkapa, and other government officials will accompany him and he is expected back home by Friday.
