The Tanzania Labour Party (TLP) presidential aspirant, Augustine Lyatonga Mrema, will launch his election campaign in the City of Mwanza next Monday.
Mrema said this yesterday in his office at the TLP headquarters located in Magomeni in Dar es Salaam.
I have planned to inaugurate my presidential campaign on August 22, this year, in the City of Mwanza,he said.
Mrema, who is TLPs national chairman, said he was breaking the habit of starting everything from the city of Dar es Salaam.
In the past we used to inaugurate all our presidential campaigns in Dar es Salaam, but this time we want to begin our journey to the State House by awarding this honour to the city of Mwanza,he explained, and added that from the Lake side city, he would proceed to Mara Region and then Kagera.
Regarding the number of parliamentary candidates on TLP ticket, he said that the Central Committee (Senate) of the National Executive Council (NEC) was scheduled to sit yesterday to scrutinise the names of all contestants.
The Central Committee is expected to meet to scrutinise the candidates from all constituencies in the country, he said, adding that some of them include bishops and pastors of Christian churches, as well as Sheikhs.
However, he claimed that TLP already has three constituencies which it is sure of winning. He named them as Kyerwa in Karagwe District, whose candidate is Benedicto Mutungilehi, Mwibara in Bunda District, being contested by Mughanywa Byatt Mutamwenga, and Vunjo in Moshi District, where Major (rtd) Jesse Makundi is vying.
Meawhile reports from the National Electoral Commission say that Mrema visited the office today to request that he submit his presidential nomination papers tomorrow but the request was refused.
A NEC official told The Guardian that all candidates are supposed to submit the forms on August 20, paving way for the start of the campaigns on the following day.
Reliable sources in TLP told this paper that Mrema had planned his return of the papers to be accompanied by a huge procession from Manzese to the city centre.
The procession was to comprise TLP members, supporters, parliamentary and councillorship aspirants from the citys seven constituencies and all the wards.
The Dar es Salaam Regional Police Commander (RPC), Alfred Tibaigana, had already been notified of the intended demonstration, the source claimed.
