The production of honey and bee wax in Singida Region has increased significantly between 1995 and this year, the Singida Regional Commissioner, Halima Y. Kasungu, has said.

In a report to mark ten years of development in the region, Kasungu attributed the increase of the production of honey and wax because of the use of 317,658 beehives.

’’In 1995 the region produced 1,560 tonnes of honey and this year the production amounted to 37,888 tonnes of honey whereas during the same period the production of bee wax increased from 2,360 to 7,220 tonnes,’’Kasungu said.

Because the production of honey and bee wax was important in the region, Singida residents had formed 23 co-operative societies of bee keepers.

At the same time residents living near Muhesi, Kizigo, Rungwa and other wild game areas obtained 36m/- in 1995, 51.3m/- in 2000 and 53.3m/- this year.

’’The region has decided to increase by two the number of game reserves. These are Chanya and Wembere plains,’’she said.

Small-scale entrepreneurs were exploiting gold resources in Londoni, Sambaru, Muhintiri, Mpambaa, Sekenke, Iluma, Simbanguru and Matongo areas.

They were also exploiting gypsum deposits in Itigi, zilcon, amethyst, garnets, quarts, green tour-marine and aqua marine gemstones in Kandanjiga, Misughaa, Kisana and Itaja.

She said salt was being exploited in Wembere depression, Kilimantide, Nkonkilangi and Singida areas.

’’There are diamond and kaolin bearing rocks in Semfuru and Sekenke areas,’’ Kasungu said.

To boost the business sub-sector in the region, three rural markets had been constructed and 2,533 entrepreneurs had been trained, she said.

The number of sunflower seed oil processing factories had increased from two ten years ago to 30 this year.

Among these, 23 were small-size factories and three were medium-size factories.
